The Last Guest is a collection of limited edition fine art prints made inside abandoned hotels and the rooms people once passed through — corridors that held a thousand arrivals, beds that were made one final morning and never turned down again, reception desks where the keys still hang and nobody is coming back for them. A hotel is a strange thing to abandon. It was built entirely for presence. Every wall, every lamp, every numbered door existed to hold people for a night and let them go. When the people stop coming, all of that holding remains — with nothing left to hold.

I learned what an abandoned room smells like when I was thirteen, standing inside Wyke House with the floors giving way above me — damp plaster, mould, the cold that lives in buildings the sun has given up on. Fifty years of other people’s rooms later, that smell still reaches me first, before my eyes have adjusted to the dark. It is the smell of a place that has stopped waiting to be useful and started waiting for something else. What that something is — and why I keep walking towards it — is the question behind What Draws Me There.

These photographs sit close to the work in The Forgotten Room and Rooms After Conversation — but a hotel room carries a different kind of absence. A home is left by one family, once. A hotel room is left thousands of times, by thousands of strangers, until one departure quietly becomes the last. Nobody marks it. Nobody knows it is happening. The door closes the way it always closed. And then the years begin.
