Nightfall on the Cobb

Where the day ends and the harbour settles into silence.

As night falls over Lyme Regis, the Cobb becomes something quieter and more enduring. The boats that spent the day on the water now rest against the stone walls, their reflections trembling on the dark surface. Above them, heavy clouds move slowly across the sky, while warm lights from the buildings spill out onto the harbour.

This is not a place of drama or spectacle. It is a place of return. The working day is over. The tide has turned. What remains is the steady presence of the old stone structure and the boats that depend on it. In the low light, the scene feels suspended — caught between one day ending and another beginning.

Some places only reveal their true character when the crowds have gone and the light has changed.

The Cobb has stood here for centuries, protecting the harbour through storms and calm. At night, it feels even more ancient. The warm glow from the windows and the reflections on the water create a contrast between human presence and the vast, darkening sky above. It is a moment of stillness in a place that has known centuries of movement.

This image forms part of a wider exploration of coastal places at rest, sitting alongside the quieter, more contemplative work found in Sanctum of Shadows.
